Safety Tips
Look for the official yellow taxis with the Ankara license plate prefix '06' and the illuminated rooftop 'TAKSI' sign, unlicensed cars rarely display both.
All legitimate Ankara taxis are required to use the meter starting at the initial flagfall. If the driver claims it's broken, simply exit and take the next cab.
Locals rely on BiTaksi and Uber for rideshare. Both apps show driver and car details in advance, making it easy to match the license plate before boarding.
For solo or late-night rides, sit in the back seat, share your live trip link via the app with a friend, and ask to be dropped at well-lit spots like Kızılay or Bahçelievler rather than quiet side streets.
Common Scams to Avoid
Drivers leaving the meter off and quoting a flat fare at the end of the ride, on runs from Esenboğan Airport or between distant districts like Çankaya, Kızılay late at night. Insist the meter (taksimetre) is started before moving and, if refused, exit and find another cab.
Taking unnecessarily long or circular routes through inner-city ring roads such as İstanbul and Çevre Yolu to inflate the fare, a tactic often reported for trips to/from the intercity bus terminal (AŞTİ). Follow the route on a map app and politely ask the driver to take the most direct way you can see.
Switching large bank notes: handing over a 200 TL note and the driver claiming it was only 20 TL, then pressuring you to pay again. Pay with smaller denominations or clearly state the note's value while handing it over. If a dispute arises, note the taxi's plate number and threaten to call the police (155), which usually ends the scam.
