Ankara perches at 850 metres above sea level on the Anatolian plateau, and that altitude dictates every nuance of the city's year-round mood. Forget the Turkey of sea breezes and turquoise bays. The climate here is continental, plain and simple: summers blaze hot and dry, winters bite with real snow, and the switch between the two can feel sudden. Spring and autumn days swing so sharply that layering stops being advice and becomes survival. Rainfall tells the seasonal story. April, May and March deliver Ankara's wettest spells, yet "wettest" is modest by European reckoning. Annual totals stay low, and showers arrive in quick, decisive bursts rather than the grey Atlantic drizzle. July and August are almost rainless, gifting an intense, shadowless heat rather than sticky clamminess. Step into shade or air conditioning and life resumes. Linger outside at noon in July and the sun rules absolutely. Winter demands respect. January nights slide to -2°C (28°F) as routine, and snow falls reliably from December through February. The Citadel and the old Ulus quarters hush under white, turning atmospheric. Tea houses and lokanta fill with locals in a scene far from tourist theatre. Yet a cold snap here is no joke if you packed for milder climes. The plateau wind slices straight through fabric, and the chill feels sharper than the thermometer admits.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Cultural
For cultural exploration, late April through May and September through October open the clearest windows. Daytime highs hover around 17-22°C (63-72°F) in spring and 20-26°C (68-79°F) in early autumn, good for walking. Anıtkabir, the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations and the Citadel reveal their stories without the fight of July heat or February wind. Crowds never reach Istanbul levels. Yet April and October bring domestic holiday traffic. Book a room a little ahead.
Adventure
For adventure and hiking, May and early June edge ahead. The plateau greens fast after spring rains, and temperatures stay below the exhausting bracket. September runs a close second: summer heat has broken, skies stay clear, and the countryside keeps a late warmth that rewards long days outside. Trails around Ankara stay muddy well into April. Early May trumps late March.
Beach
Ankara is landlocked, hours from any coast, so forget beach fantasies. Treat the city as a cultural stopover or standalone trip, not a sun holiday. The best months for simply being outside, whether in city parks or the Atatürk Forest Farm and Zoo, are May and September.
Budget
Budget hunters should eye November through February. Rates drop and tourist numbers thin. The catch is plain: it's cold, some outdoor sights look bleak under grey winter light, and short days curb walking time. Yet indoor attractions shine. Museums, the political quarter and covered markets keep their appeal. The city feels real, workaday, authentic. You need no sun to enjoy it.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Ankara.

Year-Round Essentials
Comfortable walking shoes with grip
Footwear matters more here than in flat coastal towns. The Citadel district throws uneven cobbles that turn slick when wet or icy.
Sunscreen
Sunscreen stays useful even in shoulder months. At 850 metres, UV punches harder than the temperature suggests.
A reusable water bottle
A refillable bottle makes sense year-round. Tap water is safe in most areas, and dry summer air dries you out fast.
A small daypack
keeps your hands free for the museums and the Citadel climb.
A lightweight rain layer
folds down small and earns its weight in spring and autumn.
Winter
Clothing
a proper coat
Accessories
hat, gloves
Layering Tip
Pack real winter kit. Coat, hat, gloves, not just a fleece. Plateau wind slices through lighter layers.
Summer
Clothing
lightweight, breathable clothing in natural fibres
Accessories
a light scarf or shawl
Layering Tip
Cotton beats synthetics in the dry heat. A light scarf covers mosque entry rules without bulk.
Spring and autumn
Layering Tip
Spring and autumn demand the most adaptable kit. Mornings and afternoons can differ by ten degrees. Pack a zip-off layer or compressible jacket.
Plug Type
Type F (the standard European Schuko format with two round pins)
Voltage
230 volts
Adapter Note
North American plugs won't fit. Bring an adapter and check if your gear accepts 230V before trusting a simple plug swap.
Skip These Items
Skip the brick guidebook. Museum labels are in clear English, and the city layout is walkable. full-coverage sun hats in winter (they're not needed and look conspicuous) sandals as your only footwear (the cobblestones will make you regret it) Leave the tux at home. Ankara is a working capital, not a dress-up resort. Smart casual wins almost everywhere.
